An Inspirational Story

Earlier today, I found out about an organization that I found truly inspirational.  It sets a wonderful example for not only the young people of our world, but also their parents and other adults.  Sweet Readers is an organization in the New York area, that pairs up middle school students with elders who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.  Some of the purposes for doing this include enriching the lives of both youngsters and seniors, educating young people about Alzheimer’s and inspiring them to be an active part of the crusade to end the disease, and to expand their outreach efforts to the community at large.

The project started when a nine-year-old young lady began reading to her grandmother, and developed a connection that proved meaningful to both of them.  Sweet Readers was organized in April of 2011.  In a very short time, it has grown to include 300 young people and 150 adults with AD in 5 cities.  They have partnered with museums and other cultural institutions, as well as people from a number of different corporations and educational facilities.  Programs are organized to include one-on-one interactions as well as group activities.

I encourage everyone to check out this fine organization, and to support it and related efforts, where-ever they may be found.  The group’s website can be found here.
